A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can get inspired to move their bodies in fun, new ways. They can learn dance routines, yoga poses, breathing techniques, aerobic exercises, and more. With the upbeat, positive approach, kids can also learn that moving and exercising can be fun and can make them feel good. They may also learn a few "academic" things with some songs that focus on learning content such as counting syllables, traveling across the 50 states, and the importance of voting.

Ease of Play

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that GoNoodle Kids is a large collection of videos that encourage kids to get up and get moving, similar to GoNoodle, which is primarily used in classrooms. Videos are a mixture of unique content and curated third-party videos, but they're all about demonstrating some way to move. Kids must create a username and password and use a parent's email address to sign up for an account. Parents will receive an email to approve the account and will need to provide the country and ZIP code. It's accessible on a computer as an app and can be used with Apple TV. Parents can turn the background music off in the settings menu. Read the developer's privacy policy for details on how your information is collected and shared.

What's it about?

GONOODLE KIDS encourages kids to get up and get their bodies moving. Kids set up an account, get parent approval, and then browse through a large library of short videos ranging from about two to five minutes long. Follow the demonstrations to dance, jump up and down, spin around, regulate breathing, get into yoga poses, and more. Some videos are individual entries, some are part of a "channel," and some also have light educational content (for example, a song about syllables). Each viewing earns accessories for decorating a silly creature.

Is it any good?

Upbeat kid-friendly videos demonstrate lots of fun ways to get your whole body moving and get some exercise. There are lots of videos in GoNoodle Kids, and naturally some are better than others. But, with a big variety of ways to move and characters to watch, most kids should find something that inspires them to get on their feet and burn some calories. And, since it's available across platforms, it's super easy to access. One nitpicky comment is that most of the music seems to fall into either the hip-hop or electronica camp, and some variety might be nice. It would also be nice to see some additional features, such as being able to save your favorite videos or combine a bunch to make a longer playlist. However, this free version does offer a lot of material. For kids who need some encouragement to get exercise or who want inspiration for learning to move in new ways, or for families who just want to have fun learning a dance routine together, GoNoodle Kids is a great option.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about how kids feel after moving around with GoNoodle Kids. How do their bodies feel after they get their heart rates up or once they calm their breathing? Why is it important to move your body a lot and in lots of different ways?

  • Watch the videos together and move with your kids! Make it a family dance party and have fun, laugh, and exercise together.

  • Encourage your kids to move in lots of ways that don't involve a screen. Get them running around outside, take them to playgrounds, and/or sign them up for a sports team (or dance, or gymnastics, or martial arts, and so on). Make sure they get at least one hour of physical activity every day.
