A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn a little about a lot of topics. Videos about science topics (including animals and weather events), cooking shows starring kids, catchy tunes about manners.

Ease of Play

Very easy to use. Easy for parents to select video topics and for kids to tap on choices to choose and play. Parent gate that appears often and requires parents to type answer to multiplication problem may be tedious.

Violence & Scariness
Sexy Stuff

Though there are branded YouTube channels, there are no ads, unboxing, or child stars.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Jellies - Safe Kids Videos is an ad-free, subscription-based curated kids' video site. The app's reviewers watch all video content before it's posted. Parents can add a playlist of videos that they've previewed so their kids can watch only what they've selected, or they can select what their kids watch by topic or age. The sometimes just fun, sometimes educational videos are organized two ways: by age (2 and up, 4 and up, 6 and up, 8 and up), and by topic (100+ topics) such as baby animals, trucks, and skateboarding. The more than 3,000 videos come from many sources including YouTube, so the videos often have brand names and/or the YouTube logo. Parents can try the app for free for 30 days, and then access requires a $4.99 per month subscription. Read the app's privacy policy to find out about the types of information collected and shared.

What's it about?

To watch videos on JELLIES - SAFE KIDS VIDEOS, first sign up for the free 30-day trial, and then browse the videos by age or subject category. Solve the multiplication problem to access the parent area, and then tap Add to Library to add a group of videos to your kid's library. Kids can tap the Play icon on the Watch in Kids Mode bar to choose a video.

Is it any good?

Younger kids will find a treasure trove of videos on this app, and parents can feel good about what they see here. Jellies - Safe Kids Videos chooses the kid-friendly videos from many sources, including YouTube. There's a lot of just-for-fun stuff here, but there are also some solid educational videos, too. Once parents establish what topic categories go into their kid's library, kids can browse dozens of videos in each category. Kids on the older side of Jellies' target audience -- those in the 8+ age range -- may want more content (like gaming videos and popular YouTubers) that's not included here, so it's probably a better fit for little kids. Many parents will love the level of control over what videos their kids watch, and young kids will love the content choices on this app. A few more parental controls around time limits would be nice.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about why it's helpful to use an app like Jellies - Safe Kids Videos to find safe video content. Explain to your kid that it's important to stay safe online just as it is in other places, and check out these other YouTube alternatives for more options.

  • Even though the videos on this app tend to include quality content, screen time limits remain important, especially for young viewers. Read Common Sense Media's How to Set Screen Rules That Stick.

  • Include your kid when choosing the topic categories to place in their video library on Jellies - Safe Kids Videos.
