What’s It About?
MEDAL.TV – GAME WITH FRIENDS is an app that allows gamers to socialize by sharing video game clips and talking to each other in real time. There's a menu on the home screen where users can choose which games they want to follow. Users can watch clips of these games, upvote and comment, and save them to their profiles. If users want to record and share their own clips, they have to create a free account, download the desktop app, and enter a computer-generated code from the app. Clips can be shared directly to other social media platforms. The chat feature allows users to follow gamers, share clips via direct messaging, chat with others on the platform, and join in chat groups.
Is It Any Good?
This app is a handy tool that allows gamers to share clips for free, which is what it's intended to do, but some of the highlighted game content is inappropriate for kids. There's a way that users can avoid iffy content by selecting only age-appropriate games. For example, Minecraft and FIFA 19 are options on the home screen game menu. Unfortunately, the other games that may cause concern are easily accessible to all users, and chat rooms have potential to expose users to abusive language and behaviors. For these reasons, the app is best suited for older teens and adult gamers.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the content of different games on Medal.tv - Game with Friends and why some games might be offensive. What content is considered off limits? How can repeated exposure to inappropriate content impact kids?
Talk about the risks of joining chat groups with strangers. Emphasize the importance of keeping information private and socializing only with known friends.
