What’s It About?
There are two guided meditations and two nature sounds available through MINDFULNESS FOR CHILDREN FREE MEDITATION FOR KIDS. Under the meditation tab, families will find guided meditations, a description of the meditations and the skills they help develop, information about mindfulness, and information about the app and the developers. Choose one of the guided meditations, press play, listen and follow along. Work on developing self-awareness and making connections between feelings, thoughts, and physical sensations. Practice breathing and visualization exercises that evoke calm and peace. Under the goodnight tab, families can access the sounds of gentle waves or nature by the sea. The launch page also has a “more apps” tab that shares information about other apps by the developer and a “join us” tab that helps families connect with the Mindfulness for Children community.
Is It Any Good?
This is a perfect opportunity if parents want to explore the idea of meditation with their kids but don't want to commit with cash since the content in this free version is limited. The calm, soothing voice in the guided meditations helps kids develop relaxation techniques, build self-awareness, and the ability to reflect; while the nature sounds evoke serenity and peace in this capped demo. Meditation for Children Free Meditation for kids introduces families to the content and quality of the app. Although the guided meditations available on the free version are on the shorter end compared to the others, they address key mindfulness techniques that can be applied to everyday situations. The nature sounds included are ideal for relaxation and bedtime, taking listeners on a journey to a beach where they hear waves crashing or birds chirping. The graphics and layout are a bit outdated and dull, but the content itself is worthwhile. It’s an easy to use tool that families can use to launch learning and conversation around mindfulness and/or to evoke relaxation and calm. The material in the free version is limited, but it's a good starting point for families wanting to explore mindfulness, without having to commit to a purchase.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the purpose and benefits of meditation while enjoying Mindfulness for Children Free Meditation for kids. When might meditation be helpful? What impact does meditation have? How can you use the techniques learned through meditation in everyday situations? These conversations can help kids connect what they are practicing in guided meditation to real life experiences.
Talk about how practicing mindfulness can help develop self-awareness and self-reflection. When we are able to recognize and acknowledge our feelings, thoughts, and physical sensations, we can better describe our experiences or work through challenges. Families may want to reinforce and/or share words or terms kids can use to describe their feelings or physical sensations.
