A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can practice creative writing, storytelling, illustrating, and drawing by creating books on Scribble Press. Kids also can learn a lot about online and print publishing. If assisted by a parent or teacher, kids can learn when to share stories privately, when to publish online, and what information to keep private when they share publicly. Overall, Scribble Press is an option-packed, carefully crafted app that likely will help kids bring countless new books to life.

Ease of Play

It's easy to create an account and start writing. With more than 500 drawing tools and 50 story templates, this app makes putting together your own book really simple.

Violence

Content depends upon what writers include in their stories. Public books are held for 24 hours before publication so in-house readers can make sure content is kid-friendly. Violent content is prohibited by the app's terms.

Sex

Content depends upon what writers include in their stories. Public books are held for 24 hours before publication so in-house readers can make sure content is kid-friendly. Vulgar and pornographic content is prohibited by the app's terms.

Language

Content depends upon what writers include in their stories. Public books are held for 24 hours before publication so in-house readers can make sure content is kid-friendly. Violent, vulgar, and pornographic content is prohibited by the app's terms.

Consumerism

Story packs (such as "Comic Creator," "Spooky Story Pack," "I Love New York," and more) and sticker packs ("Valentine's Day," "Holiday," and more) are promoted as in-app purchases for $0.99 each. An author can order a printed copy of his or her book. The story and sticker packs are promoted at the top of the main page, and there's a shopping cart at the bottom of the page. At the time of this review, printing prices were $14.95 per book.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Content depends upon what writers include in their stories. Public books are held for 24 hours before publication so in-house readers can make sure content is kid-friendly. Content related to drugs is prohibited by the app's terms.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Scribble Press is a kid-friendly app kids can use to write and illustrate books, publish them publicly or privately, and even order a printed copy. Kids can start with a blank book and let their imaginations run or use a premade story line, which is especially handy for younger kids or kids who need more structure in their storytelling or creative writing. All books that users want to share publicly are held for 24 hours to make sure the content is acceptable for kids. Still, kids under 13 aren't allowed to create an account; parents will have to work with younger storytellers to ensure that they know the rules of public publishing versus sharing their work privately and how to protect their personal information.

What's it about?

SCRIBBLE PRESS is a kid-friendly book-creation and -publication app that kids can use to write and illustrate stories, publish them online or in print, and view other kids' books. More than 500 writing and drawing tools allow kids to convey their stories and their messages via words, fonts, colors, images, and more. After you create an account, tap New Book to start working on a blank template or a pre-made story line, including ideas such as "If I ran for president" or "My first day at my new school." Tap New Drawing to draw a picture, or tap Browse Books to find and read books published publicly by other Scribble Press users. Kid works can be published online publicly or privately, or printed copies can be ordered directly from the app. Scribble Press also offers kids the option to draw to make pictures, greeting cards, or other one-page works. Scribble Press provides kids with ways to practice storytelling and use creativity and share as much or as little as desired.

Is it any good?

Kids are empowered by Scribble Press to imagine and create stories with whatever storytelling skills they currently have, whether it involves using one of the 50 pre-made story templates or starting completely from scratch and moving all the way to public publishing. You'll need to be involved with younger kids, and even for older kids parents may want to provide reminders about guarding personal information if kids want to publish their books on the app publicly. But the options for creativity are nearly limitless, and kids will be able to choose their own levels of book customization. Scribble Press lives up to its motto -- "Imagine, Create, Publish" -- and it's a great way for kids to explore storytelling, illustrating, and publishing.
