A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

The controls are easy to master, but can be fairly sluggish, which makes the app difficult to play well at times. The game corrects for this somewhat by making it very difficult to fall to your death, even though ledges and steps break away with impunity.

Violence

There's a lot of action in this adventure game, and you'll spend the majority of your time time shooting people with a variety of guns or manually strangling them. There is no blood, though. In addition to humans, you'll also fight a number of mythical creatures, such as scarab beetles that squirt poisonous green gas.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Shadow Guardian HD is an action-adventure title for the iPad. The game includes plenty of shooting and fist-fighting as well as explosions. There is, however, no blood, and it isn't gory by any means. The controls tend to get stuck from time to time, but the game seems to realize this and compensates with plenty of hints and directional arrows. There is a version for the iPhone/iPod Touch that is similar but lacking the high-definition graphics found in this iPad version.

Is it any good?

As it does with so many of its titles, SHADOW GUARDIAN HD is Gameloft's attempt to clone Uncharted, a hit PlayStation 3 franchise, for iDevices. And while on some technical levels, this app succeeds -- the graphics are gorgeous for the iPad platform, and it has the requisite blend of jumping, action, and puzzles -- it ultimately falls short. What holds the Uncharted series together is a nuanced story with characters you care about. That's not present here, and the game's flaws are enhanced because of it. The pacing is fine, and the combat is not bad, but without anything tying them together, Shadow Guardian HD ultimately is a mere shadow of a much better title.
