A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

Steering by tilting the iPad works well enough, but players can also opt for thumb-tap controls.

Violence & Scariness

Players can zap opponents' karts with special powers. This might mean turning a rival into a pumpkin, leaving an exploding box for him to hit, shooting her with a slingshot, or some other cartoonish type of slapstick attack.

Sexy Stuff

No bad language, but there are fart jokes.

The game features characters and locations from the Shrek movie series.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Shrek Kart HD is a cartoony racing game based on and featuring characters from the Shrek films. Just like the films that inspired it, the game is full of comedic slapstick violence (nothing graphic at all) and lowbrow humor (Shrek, for instance, can fart at opponents to slow them down). But if your kids are Shrek fans, you probably know what you're getting into with this app. Multiplayer races can be played via WiFi or a direct iPad-to-iPad Bluetooth connection.

Is it any good?

SHREK KART HD looks as good and plays as smoothly as some of the kart-racing games found on console systems, like the Nintendo Wii. Motion-control steering makes the game easy to pick up and play, and there are unlockable characters and levels to add incentive for repeated playing. Of course, most of those console kart racers shine in multiplayer mode. Here, though, you'd have to get some friends together, each with an iPad and app download of their own. Still, there's a hearty single-player experience here, and the app is more than worth its price tag.
