What parents need to know

Ease of play

Supercow uses three controls: left, right, and jump. The app gives you four different ways to access those controls. Jumping always requires a tap on the screen, but to move, you can tilt, slide your finger on the screen, or press left and right arrows. The last option comes with a left-handed or right-handed orientation.

Violence

Supercow stops her enemies by jumping on their heads. There is no blood and the defeated characters just bounce off the screen. Supercow can be harmed by other characters throwing things, biting, or stinging her. The introduction to the story shows the villain, Professor Duriarti, dangling a tearful bunny by the ears.

Language

While there is no cursing, there is some humor that is advanced for young kids. There are jokes about hemorrhoids and using laxatives to subdue the animals.

Consumerism

The main page of the app has ads for other games by the publisher along with links to their website. The main page of the game encourages you to post to Twitter or Facebook every day to earn a free extra life.

Privacy & safety

Minor privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple’s Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. With Game Center, players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party’s Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender’s email address. The main page of the game encourages you to post to Twitter or Facebook every day to earn a free extra life, but participation is optional. There is also the option to join the email newsletter.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Supercow: funny farm arcade platformer HD is a platform game that requires navigating a variety of levels, collecting coins, and defeating enemies by jumping on their heads. The story line is weak, but the game itself is fun. Even the more challenging levels provide plenty of opportunity for success. Kids can play to just get through the game, or they can strive to reach the highest score possible. There are a number of on-screen hints and instructions that require the ability to read. Younger kids will no doubt struggle with advanced levels, but will certainly enjoy the easier levels.

QUALITY

SUPERCOW is cartoony, platforming fun. Kids will enjoy exploring the levels and searching for coins as much as knocking out spiders, gophers, crows, frogs, dogs, and other enemies. The only drawback is a goofy storyline that is dragged down further by mature potty humor. With 50 levels, there is plenty of play value, especially if kids want to strive for a perfect score and to win all of the in-game trophies.
