A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

With this open-ended creative platform, kids have free reign to experiment and express themselves. Kids can try on an endless number of hairstyles, colors, types, and more. They'll use their imaginations to create realistic or totally crazy looks as they discover what their own preferences are. And they'll make decisions about what tools to use to create different effects.

Ease of Play

Play is as easy as tapping and swiping. It does take some fine motor control to get the cut or style just right, but kids should catch on quickly.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Toca Hair Salon 3 is an open-ended game lets kids get creative with a seemingly endless supply of characters and styling options. This updated version has all the features of the popular previous versions, plus some new additions. Kids have more characters to choose from, more cutting and styling tools to use, more coloring options, more hair types and textures, and more accessories. Also, kids can take a snapshot of their hair creations and save the photo to their device's camera roll. Parents can turn this option off, as well as hide the "Toca News" (advertising) icon and the Parents' section icon or turn off the background music in the device's settings menu. Because there's no obvious stopping point, parents may want to help their kids find places to pause. Read the developer's privacy policy for details on how your information is collected and shared.

What's it about?

Choose from an ever-changing array of characters to take into the stylist's chair in TOCA HAIR SALON 3. In the salon get to work cutting, styling, washing, coloring, and accessorizing your client's hair. Tools are on a bar at the bottom of the screen; swipe left or right to toggle through 10 sets. Straighten, curl, braid, comb, play around with facial hair, and more. If you cut too much, use the grow tool. Characters respond with facial expressions and noises as you work. When you're done, choose a backdrop and take a snapshot of your masterpiece.

Is it any good?

Kids have lots of room to express themselves, get creative, and try out many looks in this open-ended salon game. This updated version has even more options for customizing your "look" and more diversity in possibilities. For instance, all characters can now grow facial hair, including characters with a feminine appearance. And kids have a more diverse set of hair types and textures to work with, which makes it easier for all kids to find hair that's like their own. Other fun features include the stereo, which when tapped changes the music it's playing, and a wide variety of accessories that can be rotated and resized. The hair looks great as you move it around the screen, but sometimes it can be hard to get it to do exactly what you want it to do. A couple nice additions might be an undo button and a mirror to see how things look on back of the head. Overall, Toca Hair Salon 3 is another example of how this series lets kids be creative and experiment in ways that are close to impossible to do offscreen.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about the different hairstyles kids come up with in Toca Hair Salon 3. Encourage them to tell stories about who the characters are. Why are they getting their hair cut or styled? Where are they going after their visit to the salon?

  • Have your kids ever seen a particularly interesting or unique hairstyle? Can they replicate it with Toca Hair Salon 3?

  • Talk about how different each of the characters looks as a way to embrace differences and express creativity.

  • When using this app with younger kids, discuss the character's facial expressions and sounds to help your kid identify each character's emotions.
