Educational Value

Kids can learn problem-solving and thinking skills and improve reading comprehension in Twisted Lands – Shadow Town Collector's Edition. When players enter a room and tap different objects, Mark's thoughts appear in a text bubble to serve as clues to gameplay. Teens have to read and interpret these clues to advance through the game. They also have to apply what they learn as new mysteries are revealed. The gameplay and puzzles in Twisted Lands - Shadow Town challenge teens to exercise important thinking skills with every spooky plot twist.

Ease of Play

The hidden objects can be tricky to find, and some of the extra puzzles are surprisingly challenging. Fortunately, players can access unlimited hints when they need them, and at any point during game play, they can tap the compass icon to enable a slightly easier mode.

The game is pretty spooky with ghost sightings and references to murders, suicides, insanity, and disappearances. The computer-generated animations have a realistic quality, and the depictions of violence -- though few -- include a stabbing with blood and a zombie dragging away a screaming woman. Players can find various weapons in the hidden-object scenes and encounter skeletons and zombies as they explore the island.

Angel, one of the main characters, wears tight clothing and short skirts. There is a reference to someone "having an affair" in a diary players can read.

The first chapter of the game is included in the free download, and players must pay to unlock the full game. There are multiple ads on the menu screen including a banner ad at the bottom, a link to more games from the developer, a link to sign up for the developer's iSplash newsletter, and an email recommendation link to send to a friend.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

In a flashback scene, Angel smokes a cigarette. In some hidden-object scenes, players are asked to find smoking paraphernalia, including a cigarette case and lighter.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Twisted Lands – Shadow Town Collector's Edition is a spooky zombie-themed adventure game that is best suited for older kids. Players take on the role of Mark as he looks for his missing girlfriend on a haunted island. There are references to murders, suicides, insanity, and disappearances, and some of the objects players look through include grown-up items like cigarettes and liquor bottles. The app is free to download, but players must pay to unlock the full game. An HD iPad version is also available.

What's it about?

Players take on the persona of Mark, exploring a haunted island in search of his missing girlfriend. The game combines hidden-object scenes, where players search for camouflaged objects, with adventure puzzles, in which players save objects in their inventory in order to solve puzzles. Players have a journal where clues are automatically collected, and they can refer to it when they find potentially useful objects. When players get stuck they can access unlimited hints; they can also enable an "easy" mode, which provides arrows to guide them.

Is it any good?

TWISTED LANDS – SHADOW TOWN COLLECTOR'S EDITION is an engrossing mystery that will have adventure gamers hooked from the first spooky scene to the unexpected conclusion. The expert graphics, chilling music, and mysterious plot make for an all-around entertaining game experience. The only weakness is in the pacing, which gets a bit slow at the end as players have to navigate back and forth through a dozen or more scenes to find objects that unlock the final puzzles. When players draw near the game's ending, the temptation to speed things up with hints is hard to resist, and makes the conclusion a bit less satisfying.

Overall, the game is tons of fun with superb design and a spine-chilling story. Though it's definitely too mature for young kids, Twisted Lands – Shadow Town Collector's Edition will keep teens and adults entertained for hours.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Play along, and encourage teens to think through the puzzles and solve them without using the hints or easy mode.

  • Model problem-solving strategies by thinking aloud.
