What’s It About?
WAKEOUT! gets people up and moving using simple exercises and routines, without the need for costly equipment or lots of time. Users can pick their workout environment, such as home, workplace, travel, or outdoor. Within each environment, there are additional choices such as bedroom, kitchen, sitting, standing, hand health, car, park, or even silly animal movement. Then choose type of workout and mood -- relaxing, energizing, intense, or fun -- and length of routine: 30 seconds, a short routine (three activities), or a long routine (five activities). These choices generate one or more activities with photos or video demonstrations, music, and a timer. There are 60 to 95 activities in every subcategory, equaling over 1,000 fitness activities total to try. Workouts provide data, such as how many active minutes have been logged, how many total workouts have been completed, and how many days in a row users have exercised. Activities can also be downloaded for offline use.
Is It Any Good?
This collection of movement activities is extensive and offers kids no-excuses opportunities to exercise anytime, everywhere. Wakeout! suggests simple tasks with tons of variety based on your kids' preferences. Exercises are so simple that kids can use them with their parents or on their own. Though most exercises are simple to do, some come only with a still photo, and it's not clear if kids should be doing repetitions or keeping a pose. At the time of this review, technical problems sometimes meant that images didn't load. Though quitting and reopening the app fixed the problem, having to do that can be frustrating and disruptive. That said, busy families who have only a few spare minutes and limited places to exercise will find lots to try out. Overall, Wakeout! engages kids in fun activities to improve strength and coordination, with easy-to-follow instructions and lots of room for customization.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how the Wakeout! app offers a "no excuses," fun way to exercise. What are some of the many benefits of exercise?
Help kids set an exercise routine. What are the rooms in your house and times of day that you plan to exercise? Will you exercise alone or with others? Make sure to allow for some flexibility too.
What exercise goals will you set? Will you track these goals on a sheet? What will your reward be for achieving your goal? Even just a few minutes a day is a good start!
