What's the Story?
ALCHEMISED is a story of magic, love, and war. Helena Marino, a foreigner, has spent years of her life in service to Paladia and the Eternal Flame as an alchemist and healer, fighting against Morrough and the Undying in a never-ending war. When she's finally pulled from the darkness, she finds that she's a prisoner of war. And she can't remember how or why she got there. Her only memories of the war are endless shifts at a hospital. But Helena slowly learns that she's a person of interest to Morrough, and her jailer, a peer from her days at the Institute, Kaine Ferron, has been tasked with retrieving information from her. Kaine tortures Helena endlessly until the truth finally returns, but that only brings complication and more questions, especially since Helena is falling in love with Kaine.
Is It Any Good?
A gripping and horrifying epic dark fantasy of magic, love, and war, this tale never shies away from hard truths. Alchemised is a must-read for fantasy and romance lovers. Author SenLinYu creates a deep world history and an intricate magic blended with science. It's a well-crafted story that easily compares to other world-building writers, like Tolkien and Herbert. But be warned, this is a deeply dark and bloody story with the central question of "Who are you once you've compromised everything to survive war, torture, and trauma?" driving the plot for 1,000+ pages. Though some sections drag a little in part one as the world gets established, the rest of the book has great pacing, compelling characters, and an absorbing plot.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about war and its lasting impacts as shown in Alchemised. How does Paladia's war against necromancy and the Undying relate to wars in real life? What do people who survive war face, both immediately and over the long term?
What role does religion play in the war, and what effects does it have on the outcome?
Helena is a brilliant, talented alchemist and healer who makes major contributions to the Eternal Flame's war efforts. Unfortunately, some of her discoveries and inventions are used against her while she's imprisoned. What do you think the author is saying about war, trauma, and responsibility by making the main character suffer the use of her own inventions?
Talk about Helena's resilience. At what cost did survival come? Is persevering at any cost to survive worth it?
