What's the Story?

THE AWAKENING follows Tory and Darcy as they navigate their new world and school. As twin orphans, Tory and Darcy have always had to fend for themselves, stealing and working odd jobs wherever possible. But one day, a man, Professor Orion, forces them to leave their human lives behind and join the fae realm. There, Tory and Darcy discover that they're actually long-lost princesses, with awesome powers, who are destined to rule the fae realm. The catch? No one wants them there, especially the Heirs who have been ruling the fae world since the princesses went missing and who harass them constantly. After all, the rule of the fae is to take power wherever and whenever possible. Will Tory and Darcy persevere and learn to control their powers, or will they succumb to the constant threats of the fae world?

Harmful bullying romance detracts from decent world building and a fast-moving plot in what could have been a great fantasy story. The magic system in The Awakening is interesting in how the fae use elemental magic and transform depending on their fae order, but the torment, emotional abuse, gaslighting, and abuser-to-lovers storylines mean none of it is easy to read, or enjoyable. The book is marketed as a "bully romance" for adults, so if teens do decide to read this book, adults should be ready to talk with them about the abusive elements and what healthy romantic relationships actually look like.
