What's the Story?
THE SILENT PATIENT begins with a murder. Alicia Berenson, a famous painter, has shot her fashion photographer husband, Gabriel, five times in the face. When police arrive at their posh London home, Alicia refuses to say anything. She stays silent through her trial and for years after at the Grove, the secure psychiatric facility to which she'd been sentenced instead of prison. When psychotherapist Theo Faber arrives at the Grove, he's determined to do what no one has been able to do—get Alicia to speak. He reaches out to her family and friends, looking for any clues that may explain her silence. He discovers her brother-in-law, Max, hated her and thought her "mad." Her cousin makes oblique references to a disturbing childhood. Barbie, her next-door neighbor, tells Theo that before the murder, Alicia was certain she was being stalked by an unknown man and was terrified of what he might do. But Alicia isn't the only one with secrets. Theo discovered that his wife, Kathy, was having an affair. When Theo finally gets permission for Alicia to start painting again, it starts with promise but ends violently when she attacks another patient, stabbing her in the eye with a paintbrush. When Alicia decides to share her diary (with entries going back to before the murder) with Theo, it not only confirms the stalking but also reveals what really happened the night of the murder. But that's not the end of the story … or the only murder.
Is It Any Good?
This chilling, hard-to-put-down thriller is filled with secrets, betrayals, and twists most readers won't see coming. The Silent Patient is written for an adult audience, and while its storylines about mental illness and childhood trauma will simply be intriguing for many readers, parents should be aware that they could be triggering for vulnerable readers. But older teens looking for a thriller that goes beyond the usual spunky teen detective should become instant fans.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how mental illness and childhood trauma are portrayed in The Silent Patient. How different would Alicia's life have been if she'd gotten the help she so desperately needed? What about Theo being unable or unwilling to stop smoking marijuana, even while in therapy?
What's it like to read a story that doesn't have the expected heroine or hero, but instead has main characters who are deeply flawed and violent?
How does a thriller meant for an adult audience differ from one written for teens? Is there content in an adult thriller that would make it unacceptable for YA readers?
