What's the Story?

On the eve of her feather ceremony, a traditional rite of passage, Daunnette Moniz-Reyome takes viewers into the heart of her UmonHon community and shows how they maintain ancient traditions AGAINST THE CURRENT. Featuring interviews with her family members, friends, and neighbors, the short documentary paints a loving picture of a community that has been battered by centuries of generational trauma and of a young woman as she tries to be part of the outside world without losing her identity.

Although she has found success as a model in publications like Teen Vogue and as an activist, 17-year-old Daunnette Moniz-Reyome always makes sure to remember her roots. As a proud member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska (also known as UmonHon), she takes viewers into the heart of her community with Against the Current, which she filmed and directed. Providing insight into ancient traditions in her community, Moniz-Reyome crafts a love letter to the UmonHon Tribe, who, like other Native American peoples, have faced enormous challenges in the United States.

Moniz-Reyome's subjects are candid about the tragedies that their community has faced, including generational and historical trauma, mental illness, and drug and alcohol abuse, but the filmmaker also paints a joyous tale to show how her community has been able to survive despite the challenges. Moniz-Reyome's voice comes through as an unstoppable force that ought to inspire young viewers of any cultural background.
