Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In BAKI HANMA VS KENGAN ASHURA, fighters from two different anime worlds find themselves fighting in an underground arena. Who will come out the victor? Which anime features the best fighters?
Is It Any Good?
At just over an hour, there isn't enough to this fighting anime to justify its existence. There's no story in Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura to speak of, either. The movie slaps these two anime together and doesn't attempt to explain or provide any logic or narrative reason for how or why their merging occurs. There is no logic or explanation either for why certain fighters are featured over others, except for the eponymous fight between Baki and Ohma. Throughout the only three fights featured, other characters from both anime sit on the side (literally) and provide color commentary.
As for the action and actual fight scenes, apart from a few brief moments, 70% of the fight choreography seems to be punches to the face. Way too often, characters will simply stand in front of each other and trade blows for minutes. These are spliced up with close-ups of fists squishing into bulging faces. Sure, characters will occasionally suffer worse injuries from more creative "moves," but the overwhelming majority of the action on display feels lazy. But mostly, because there's no story and no narrative justification for what is going on, it's hard to get invested in any fight, especially if you aren't a fan of either anime. But even fans of these properties will likely get very little out of this exercise.
