Parents' Guide to Elize: Shadows of a Woman

Formula can still work, and it does in this true crime Brazilian psychological thriller. Elize: Shadows of a Woman plays like a Lifetime movie handed a much bigger budget for violence, sex, and dread, and even while checking every box true crime asks of it, the film manages to be entertaining, which feels almost uncomfortable to admit. What it never does is settle on what story it's telling. At times it looks for an explanation of Elize's violence rooted in an abusive childhood, and at other times it looks instead for outrage over how she lost her daughter after the murder. It hits its marks scene by scene without ever adding up to a real point of view.

Comparato is the reason to watch. She plays Elize first as someone calculating her own way out of a brutal past rather than a swooning romantic, then lets that composure turn into devotion and back into trauma again by the end. One image lingers longer than anything else in the movie: Elize holding her daughter moments after the murder, blood on her skin, lit like a Renaissance painting. The film rarely reaches that height again. The actress brings a seductive charm to Elize that recalls Rebecca De Mornay's performance in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, convincing enough that the possibility of real happiness almost feels within reach. The non-chronological structure, opening with the murder before circling back, taps into true crime's appetite for spectacle more than it builds actual tension. By the end, the film wants viewers to sympathize with Elize, judge her, and gawk at her, all at once, and that refusal to choose reads like confusion not complexity.
