What's the Story?

In MILF, old friends head to the beach to help Cecile (Virginie Ledoyen), a 43-year-old mother of two kids who are away at camp, pack up the beach house she shared with her deceased husband in preparation for a sale. Sonia (Marie-Josee Croze) manages talent and Elise (Axelle Laffont) is a tax lawyer and single mom to daughter Nina. Writer-director and star Laffont immediately lets us know that these three are not ordinary 40-somethings in several ways. In an early scene, one bares her breasts while driving her car on a highway. The other two do nothing to indicate that they find this behavior unusual. Also out of the ordinary is the fact that all three of these women are slender, muscular, and taut, making them somewhat outstanding examples of their age group. The women attract the attention of three sailing camp counselors on the local beach, seemingly decades younger. Paul (Wael Sersoub) relentlessly pursues a sexual relationship with Elise. Sonia warms to Julien (Matthias Dandois). Cecile is still mourning the loss of her husband and ignores the advances of Markus (Victor Meutelet), once her children's young babysitter, but eventually she succumbs.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say ( 2 ):
Kids say ( 3 ):

This movie is tasteless and idiotic, with hardly a character to like. It's not troubling or in any way abnormal that 30-year-old men would find 50-year-old women attractive and vice versa. And it's wonderful that women like the ones here seem to feel comfortable in their own skins, but this is not the point of the movie. Perhaps the goal is to provide a counterpoint to scores of movies about older men coupling with younger women. But MILF doesn't even accomplish that.

Unlike other films about younger men an older women -- good ones including The Graduate, Adoration, Unfaithful, and Notes on a Scandal -- there's no cleverness, wit, humor, or empathy here. Apart from one smitten young man who wants to have a serious relationship and raise a child with a woman 20 years his senior, there's hardly a sympathetic character to root for. A woman is mocked for her tight pants and the "camel toe" they cause, yet, though a side character, she turns out to be the nicest, kindest, savviest, and most admirable person in the film. One younger man boasts of his conquest and offers details after he's had sex with Elise. Once he's had her, he tires and drops her, admitting that he's a jerk, then flirting with other women right in front of her. That the forty-something women want to have anything to do with the crass, brutish, idiotic guys who keep reducing women they see to sexual objects is puzzling, suggesting that the women have little or no self esteem, a possibility that's not explored. Perhaps it's unfair to ask that this movie try to be intelligent, sensitive, moving, or emotionally astute. Candid sexuality can play an important role in good movies. That's not what's happening here.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how to judge value in a movie. MILF presents pretty people in beachwear, and at times naked, flirting, kissing, and having sex, with men and women sexually objectifying each other. Do you think a movie needs more to make it meaningful, or even at least watchable, or is that enough?

  • The movie seems to indicate that while people sometimes enter into sexual relationships just for the sex, sometimes stronger emotional ties can develop in one or the other partner. Does the story here suggest that there's any possibility any of these relationships will be long-lasting? Do you think they seem doomed from the start? Why or why not?

  • How much of a role does the movie suggest alcohol plays in some ill-advised behavior?
