What's the Story?

JJ (Dave Bautista) has come in from the field for a desk job at the CIA so he can be more present (and safe) for stepdaughter Sophie (Chloe Coleman) in MY SPY: THE ETERNAL CITY. Trouble is, Chloe is 14 and not that interested in spending a bunch of time with her stepfather, nor in the activities they used to enjoy together. She's more interested in boys, one in particular—classmate Ryan (Billy Barratt). He doesn't pay much attention to Chloe, and she in turn doesn't realize best friend Colin (Taeho K) has a major crush on her. All three are in the school choir together, and when the choir gets a chance to perform in Italy, Chloe sees an opportunity to get to know Ryan better. She doesn't anticipate JJ will come on the trip as a chaperone, and neither realizes there are bad guys with plans that involve potential harm to all of them, including Colin's dad, David (Ken Jeong).

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say ( 6 ):
Kids say ( 3 ):

Following on the endearing dad-daughter original, this sequel packages together an equal blend of action, suspense, humor, and tenderness. The schtick in My Spy: The Eternal City of the colossal Bautista playing a gentle father figure continues to work (hard on the outside, soft and mushy "like an avocado" on the inside). The film's comedy is its strongest point, keeping viewers engaged despite predictable storylines and by-the-book action sequences. Toward that end, supporting actors like Jeong and Kristen Schaal make excellent choices, as do the winning teen actors, led by Coleman.
