Noah Kahan: Out of Body
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Noah Kahan is about to play one of the biggest concerts of his life at Fenway Park in Boston when NOAH KAHAN: OUT OF BODY begins. The documentary then takes us back in time to reconstruct Kahan's early career, his childhood, and his difficulties writing a new album after the huge success of his last. The film offers insights into Kahan's family and emotions by weaving together home video footage of the singer and his siblings growing up in rural Vermont, and interviews with the artist, his family, friends, and closest musical collaborators. Kahan talks about his body dysmorphia and the need for more mental health support for young boys and men in rural areas.
Is It Any Good?
Compared with the stack of musician documentaries that have landed on the streaming market in recent years, this one is rawer and more open, making it more interesting. In Noah Kahan: Out of Body, Kahan is called "humble" and tries to show that (in one scene, literally saying he's trying to look humble). But that's Kahan making fun of himself, which he does often in this video. In reality, the documentary only fulfills what Kahan has already done through his music, which is to talk openly and honestly about his own struggles—as a man, an artist, a child of divorce, a New Englander, and a person who seeks help to deal with his own mental health struggles.
The film supports his musical messages by showing him in intimate, off-stage moments—working through lingering issues with his loving parents and close siblings, talking about his strong desire to move back to Vermont with his then-fiancée (who also grew up in the area) and true friends, needing an escape from his overwhelming career, and admitting that the creative process isn't always easy. It all builds a very personal portrait and a brave one for a public figure to share.
