What's the Story?

In REBEL MOON – PART TWO: THE SCARGIVER, Kora (Sofia Boutella) and Gunnar (Michiel Huisman) learn that Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein) isn't dead. Instead, he and his spaceship full of soldiers are on their way back to the village of Veldt to take their revenge. The villagers must prepare to defend their wheat, village, and lives, with help from the gathered crew of interplanetary warriors -- General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), Tarak (Staz Nair), Nemesis (Bae Doona), Milius (Elise Duffy), and robot Jimmy (voiced by Anthony Hopkins).

The full second hour of this two-hour sequel is one long, fiery, bloody battle, which should tell you whether you're likely to enjoy the film or not. The brawny cast of rebels is back in Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, but rather than the planet-hopping journey of the first movie, this film's story is much more limited in scope and setting, making it ultimately less interesting as far as characters and story complexity. We do get the backstories of the warriors in an overly self-serious confessional scene, set up mostly as justification for their own sacrifices in the fighting to come.

As in the first film, the movie displays some beautiful cinematography and effects. You could quibble that there's an excessive use of slow motion in both the impressively-choreographed battle scenes and a sequence involving the villagers harvesting their wheat. Yes, the warriors have stunning physiques and are capable of superhuman exploits. Yes, the golden light on the distinctively Nordic-looking community is beautiful. But what's the larger significance? Beyond rooting for the underdogs, why should we be invested in these characters from chapter to chapter?
