What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Still Out of My League is a genre-fest mashup of romance, comedy, and a young woman with a deadly disease. It's a sequel to the movie Out of My League. Like The Fault in Our Stars, the threat of death hangs over a romance. In Italian with English subtitles, the film manages to include two gay best friends, workplace harassment, not caring about what others think, and the challenges of dating while maintaining a cheerful, upbeat tone. Someone mentions "S&M on ketamine." A woman in bustier and garters starts to do a striptease on Facetime for her boyfriend, but they're interrupted. Language includes "f--k," "s--t," ass," "d--k," "hell," "damn," and "bitch." Adults drink alcohol and kiss. A man hacks into his girlfriend's social media in order to find out if she's cheating on him. A woman entraps a sexual predator boss who has a history of using his position to hit on previous employees.

What's the Story?
In STILL OUT OF MY LEAGUE, Marta (Ludovica Francesconi) had been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a child and has lived well into her twenties with the knowledge that her only hope for a long normal life is a double lung transplant one day. In the meantime, she has decided to live life to the fullest and bouncing with energy and charm, she asks the cutest guys out, and has romances, even as she carries an oxygen tank everywhere she goes. She lives with two childhood best friends, Jacopo (Jozef Gjura) and Federica (Gaja Masciale), who substitute as her family ever since her parents died in a car crash. Although she dutifully goes to the doctor for checkups with her best friends there for support, she isn't as diligent as she might be about her meds. Her doctor warns her she's playing with fire. As someone who has always lived with the possibility of imminent death, she nevertheless throws herself into her romance with Gabriele (Giancarlo Commare), an artist who returns the ardor. They seem the perfect couple until he takes a job in Paris and things crumble -- uncertainties, jealousies -- under the pressure of distance.
Is It Any Good?
Still Out of My League is a good movie that at times doesn't trust how good it is, leading the filmmakers to fall back on formulaic plot turns of the kind frequently used in less engrossing movies. These are the only false notes here. Setting up a reason for a boyfriend to become jealous, Marta goes out with a handsome delivery guy, supposedly to determine if he is gay on behalf of her besotted roommate. Couldn't she just have asked? The messages nevertheless are engaging and earnest. A sought-after social influencer cares too much about her image and what others think, afraid to let the world knows she loves someone who isn't movie-star handsome. Finally, she's able to let go of her shame and let her followers know who he is. Note that the ending suggests a sequel.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how difficult it would be for a young person to face a serious disease without parents or family. Do Marta's friends do a good job providing the support Marta needs? Why or why not?
Do you think having an illness and needing to responsibly take care of your health would make a teen or young adult grow up faster or learn to be more responsible than peers? Why or why not?
Do you think Marta's optimism hides her fears? Why or why not?
