This Italian fantasy adventure is an energetic TV movie that never quite settles on what it wants to be. The Voyagers thrusts a trio of modern-day Italian teens back in time to 1939 resulting in a mix of historical adventure, wise-cracking action, and relationship drama. But through the hail of pop-culture references, fight scenes, and near misses, we still have to rely on exposition-heavy dialogue to tell us who these characters are, what they want, and how a convoluted plot to build Mussolini some sort of super soldier fits into it all.

It's unfair to compare this modest offering to big-budget fare. But Captain America: The First Avenger is an obvious reference point, with its mix of sci-fi and a period setting. Unlike that movie, and others within the same genre that work better, The Voyagers never really gives us someone to root for. Its thrown-together mix of heroes are largely unremarkable, while its villains chew the scenery as either dastardly government stooges or black-clad, weapons wielding assailants. The bizarre decision to layer a contemporary pop music soundtrack over 1930s fight and chase scenes adds to what ends up playing out like a bundle of ideas, rather than a cinematic journey worth taking.
