What's the Story?

Alma Lancaster (Vittoria di Savoia) is a rule follower whose wealthy family expects her to study law and take over her dad's business when she graduates from college in YOU+ME – AGAINST THE WORLD. Trouble is, her passion is film, and she has decided to pursue that degree without telling anyone in her family. She's paired on day one of class with mysterious outsider Vadim (Lucas Barski), who she thinks is going to ruin her grade. Boyfriend Tim (Leo Legrand) warns her to stay away from Vadim, and everyone on campus seems to know he's trouble. As the two begin work on their project, they find they have an undeniable spark. But can they overcome her family's plans for her? And what about the secret life Vadim is hiding?

The attractive seafront setting and young European cast can't mask the feeling that you've seen this story before, maybe many times before, though the location and language vary. Amazon Prime is betting on a popular book trilogy and a tried-and-true formula with You+Me – Against the World. Boy meets girl from a different world. They experience an immediate physical attraction and fall in love, but then cannot be together for reasons beyond their control. Problem is, their worlds are never that different and the agents of separation are always overly dramatized (and, in this case, predictable). We've seen it in the After series, the Fault series, and their copycats. The actors stay young, but the formula feels old.

  • The film is based on a book trilogy. Do you think the ending opened up the possibility of a sequel? How so, and what do you expect will happen?

  • The film is set in France. Could it be located elsewhere? What would change?
