What's the Story?
DUDES follows a group of friends in Germany stumbling their way through their early 40s. Ulf (Tom Beck), hotshot magazine editor, is fighting for a promotion. Cem (Serkan Kaya) is a therapist stuck ruminating on his recent divorce. Andi (Moritz Führmann) juggles work life and intimacy with his wife. Playboy chef Erik (David Rott) finally wants to settle down with his longtime girlfriend. As society tells them that the very concept of masculinity is to blame for their pitfalls, the men start to wonder if they can maneuver (or manipulate) their manhood to their advantage.
Is It Any Good?
This series attempts to satirize the misery of manhood in the 2020s. Dudes is raunchy, humorous, yet surprisingly conscious (occasionally). The topic of masculinity has been the subject of many shows, and the often-shallow exploration of emotions, romance, sexism, and friendship is present in this series too. But the fast pacing, flawed character dynamics, and vulnerability (from the "dudes" and everyone affected by them) is attempted throughout the series. Still, any potential self-awareness will probably get lost in all the cursing, sex, and drinking.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about masculinity. What do you think Dudes is trying to say about manhood? What does "being a man" mean to you? Howe does society affect this? Do the main characters in this show remind you of people in your community?
This series is one of many remakes of the Spanish comedy Alpha Males. Have you seen the other versions of this show (like the French series Shafted?) Why do you think this series is often remade in different countries? Are there any substantial differences? Do you think it's necessary?
