What's the Story?

GHOSTS tells the story of Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe), a young couple fruitlessly searching for a new place to live. Fate intervenes one day when -- while looking at yet another lackluster flat above a smelly restaurant -- Alison receives a surprise phone call informing her she's inherited a huge, though ramshackle, mansion in the country due to the passing of a distant relative. The pair soon realize this is a moneymaking opportunity, and plan to live there while rehabbing the space into a luxury hotel. Unbeknownst to them (until Alison sustains a concussion after a fall that renders her temporarily dead), the house, known as Button Hall, is absolutely riddled with ghosts. Her brief near-death experience leaves Alison with the ability to see those who have passed on, and she quickly learns that this crew of restless spirits -- including a Stone Age-era caveman (Laurence Rickard) with an affinity for chess, a foppish poet (Mathew Baynton) who died in a duel during Romantic times, and prudish Edwardian murder victim Lady Fanny Button (Martha Howe-Douglas) -- is outraged by the idea of "their" resting place being overrun by strangers. The living inhabitants of Button Hall must soon come to an understanding of sorts with the home's bevy of phantoms, and wackiness ensues as they learn to coexist despite their many hilarious differences.

This supernatural-tinged series is packed with daffy, laugh-a-minute charm and an endearingly goofy cast of characters. Ghosts is a quintessentially British sitcom -- each 30-minute episode is crammed full of sharp writing and kooky pratfalls, with a tone that's both silly yet occasionally touching. This is a group of performers who absolutely relish working together, and their affection definitely shows. Up-and-coming comedienne Lolly Adefope (who also plays "Fran" on Shrill) is, unsurprisingly, a standout as the winsome and wide-eyed Kitty, a sweet and silly noblewoman from Georgian times who seems to want nothing more in her (after)life than to make a real friend. The simple premise allows the canny writing and engaging actors to really shine, making this delightful series a great choice for families wanting to hang out together and watch something a little offbeat.

  • Families can talk about the way the afterlife is depicted in Ghosts. The spirits on the show are stuck walking around just as they looked when they died, and hanging around in the location where they expired. How does this compare to the way ghosts are depicted on other shows? How do comedies and horror films differ in the way they portray ghosts?
