What's the Story?

GRAND CAYMAN: SECRETS IN PARADISE is an unscripted reality series featuring wealthy and up-and-coming residents living on the Caribbean island of Grand Cayman. The series stars reality personality Elizabeth Chambers, who's rebuilding her life after divorcing controversial actor Armie Hammer by opening an island location of her Texas-based business, BIRD Bakery. She's joined by Manchester, U.K. native Chelsea Flynn, who had a baby with Tyson, a local guy with a bad reputation; marketing company owner Cass Lacelle; former Canada resident Olivia Coleman and her husband Trevor; and British DJ Connor Bonney. Local islanders like former Victoria's Secret Angel model Selita Ebanks, her good friend Julian Foster, entrepreneur Aaron Bernardo, party-loving Craig Jervis, radio personality Trevor Bilewich, and real estate agent and reality personality Dillon Claasens are also part of the gang. Rounding out the cast is local islander Courtney McTaggart, who unwittingly finds herself caught up in rumors about Armie Hammer's scandalous sex life. It's a small island where, for better or for worse, everyone knows everyone else's business, and not everyone gets along. But they're all pretty clear that they're lucky to be living in a luxurious tropical paradise, and they need to respect it.

The soapy and voyeuristic unscripted series show offers lots of relationship drama between people living a privileged Caribbean lifestyle. Elizabeth Chambers is a producer of Grand Cayman: Secrets in Paradise, so it's not surprising that there are sensational moments that discuss her marriage with Armie Hammer and subsequent events. But outside of this, there aren't a whole lot of interesting things going on. Granted, the series highlights the professional lives of a few of the cast members, and on brief occasions expands on some local cultural norms. But most of what's featured involves boozing, gossiping, and backstabbing.

  • Families can talk about what life on a Caribbean island is like. Are all parts of it beautiful and relaxing? Are there downsides to living there?

  • Do the producers of Grand Cayman: Secrets in Paradise exploit the Armie Hammer scandal to make the series entertaining? Is this appropriate, given that he's not a cast member?
