What's the Story?

La Liga: Más allá del gol, known in English as LALIGA: ALL ACCESS, chronicles Spain's 2023-24 premier football (soccer) competition. Throughout its 93 seasons La Liga (translation: The League) has produced champion balonpie or football teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona, and featured renown players like Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, and Lionel Messi. Now cameras follow the presidents, coaches, and players of La Liga's 2023-24 qualifying clubs as they play their way toward the championship league cup and qualify for European competitions. Club presidents like Ángel Torres of Getafe CF, coaches like Míchel Sánchez of Girona FC, along with players like FC Barcelona's Ferran Torres, Iñaki Williams of Athletic Club Bilbao, Óliver Torres of Sevilla FC, and Takefusa Kubo of Real Sociedad talk about their commitment to the sport, their clubs, and their professional goals, along with their thoughts about their wins and losses. In some cases they also share aspects of their personal lives. Conversations with Movistar Plus+ journalist Lucía Villalón and archive footage of matches help round out the series.

Our review:

Kids say ( 1 ):

From unexpected wins to crushing losses, this compelling sports docuseries offers viewers the opportunity to revisit some of La Liga's highs and lows during Spain's premier 2023-24 football season. As matches are played, it reveals how some clubs are trying to regain their former glory on the pitch, and how financial struggles and concerns about relegation are rising behind the scenes. Some of the matches are also contextualized within conversations about club rivalries, including the bitter 100-year strife between Basque clubs Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao. Granted, much of what LALIGA: All Access offers isn't much different from most streaming European football-themed docuseries. But what makes it stand out are the conversations about the individual cultures of the Spanish clubs, some of which reflect the political, cultural, and surprisingly nationalist values of the Spanish region from which they come. Nonetheless, most of the series' focus is on the sport itself, and those who enjoy Spanish balonpie, or who just enjoy football in general, will be excited and entertained by what is offered here.
