What's the Story?
LOL: LAST ONE LAUGHING UK is a comedy competition designed to see if a cast of comedians can successfully make each other laugh while keeping a straight face. Ten comedians are put in a room set up with cameras, a staging area, comfortable couches, and a kitchenette for six hours. While in there, they must interact with one another and try to get their fellow humorists, including entertainers like Alan Carr, Diane Morgan, and Richard Ayoade, to smirk, grin, giggle, or laugh. The catch? Each entertainer has to achieve this without laughing themselves. Host Jimmy Carr sits in a control room and monitors the scene with co-host Roisin Conaty. If they catch someone reacting to a fellow cast member's humor, Carr gives the participant a penalty card. The first one is only a warning, but if they receive a second penalty they're pulled out of the game. The comedian who's able to make it through the six hours without cracking a smile gets a trophy and a cash prize to donate to their preferred charity.
Is It Any Good?
The fun, albeit slightly complicated British adaptation of the Japanese reality comedy competition Documental demonstrates how hard it is for comedians to remain serious when they share their craft. Each of LOL: Last One Laughing UK's six episodes features one hour of the overall competition, during which time the cast is subjecting each other to wit and buffoonery. They must also comply with orders handed down by Jimmy Carr, all of which are designed to make the game harder. Granted, LOL: Last One Laughing UK sometimes feels weighted down by too many gimmicks, and some of the British humor will miss the mark with some stateside viewers. But even if the jokes aren't funny to U.S. ears, watching the lengths the comedians will go to hold themselves together is very amusing.
