What's the Story?

DI Colette Cunningham receives a call while at work (mid-arrest) in London that her estranged daughter Stacey has been found dead, and it's believed that she took her own life. Cunningham drops everything to travel to Dublin to identify the body, then arranges for an unorthodox work transfer to the Dublin Garda so that she can assist in solving what she believes to be her daughter's murder. Daughter Stacey leaves behind two teen children who DI Cunningham moves in with. The series spans the navigation of these new familial relationships, uncovering a mysterious bag of drugs, and solving several crimes along the way.

Is It Any Good?

If you liked Happy Valley, Broadchurch, The Fall, or The Killing, you will very likely enjoy this similiar series. The characters in Redemption are strong, complex, damaged, and endearing. DI Colette Cunningham navigates delicate relationship with DS Jane Connolly (Siobhan McSweeney of Derry Girls) as well as her rebellious grieving teen granddaughter (Abby Fitz) and tender-hearted, openly gay young grandson (Evan O'Connor). A fair amount of the series is shot inside of police stations and within surveillance cars; however, if you enjoy seeing Irish towns, there are more than enough scenes that will make you want to put on a cable-knit sweater and get cozy. The script isn't ground-breaking, but Redemption is an enjoyable watch with moments of humor and solid acting.

  • As a crime series, Redemption's plot line follows criminal activity, but also several channels of secrecy. What techniques does your family have in place when potentially upsetting or delicate topics require discussion?
