What's the Story?
STILL UP is a British romantic comedy about two people who are bonded by insomnia. Lisa (Antonia Thomas) is a lively illustrator who lives with her rather boring but reliable partner Veggie (Blake Harrison) who can't sleep due to worrying about her young daughter Poppy (Bronte Smith). Also sleep deprived is Danny (Craig Roberts), an agoraphobic journalist who lives alone, but often is helped by well-intentioned neighbors like Adam (Luke Fetherston) and "Cat Man" (Richard Fulcher). Lisa and Danny have only met once in person, but spend their sleepless nights on their phones talking and slowly falling in love.
Is It Any Good?
The sweet semi-romantic comedy relies on conversations to move the story along as the relationship between the two main characters evolves from friendship to unspoken romance. Lisa (Antonia Thomas) and Danny (Craig Roberts) talk about everything during their late-night escapades, which lead to some well-timed quips and entertaining outcomes. The smart and dry humor also contributes to the compelling narrative. Meanwhile, both Lisa and Danny are extremely likable characters, which adds to the show's charm. It isn't an action-packed series, which may be a turnoff for some folks. But if you're looking for a TV series that's both amusing and clever, Still Up is worth tuning in to. Worst case, it'll cure your insomnia.

Would Still Up's premise work if viewers had not become more comfortable with distance communication during the COVID pandemic? Can relationships really evolve into something serious when it's based on cell phone or digital exchanges?
