The Dynasty: UConn Huskies
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
THE DYNASTY: UCONN HUSKIES, an installment of the Dynasty franchise, is a three-part docuseries celebrating the rise and dominance of the University of Connecticut's women's basketball team. As it follows the team during the 2024-25 season, the series chronicles how Hall of Fame head coach Geno Auriemma built the women's basketball program from the ground up 40 years earlier, and how he's led them to 12 championships since 1995. Interviews with Auriemma, along with some of the program's legendary alumni like Sue Bird, Rebecca Lobo, Maya Moore, and more contemporary players like Paige Bueckers help describe the behind-the-scenes efforts made to create and maintain what is now a college basketball powerhouse. They, along with coaching staff like Chris Dailey, Jamelle Elliott, and former UConn Men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun, share their perspectives on Auriemma's coaching style and controversial behavior. Meanwhile, former Tennessee Lady Vols players like Mickie DeMoss share their insights about playing against UConn. Additional interviews and archive game footage round out the narrative.
Is It Any Good?
The overall docuseries offers a celebratory, albeit superficial examination of the rise of University of Connecticut's women's basketball program thanks to Geno Auriemma. Much of the focus of The Dynasty: UConn Huskies is on the way Auriemma elevated the team, and how his coaching style challenges patriarchal ways of thinking about female athletes and women's sports. It is within this context that the team's key eras and successes are discussed. But while many sing his praises, it's hard to ignore Auriemma's history of blunt public comments and heated rivalries, especially with former University of Tennessee's Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt. Nonetheless, The Dynasty: UConn Huskies successfully showcases how he helped raise the overall profile of female athletes, and how the women he coached played up to his expectations.
