The Forsytes
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
THE FORSYTES are one of the most esteemed and reputable families in Great Britain. A new generation is ushered in when Jolyon Forsyte Jr. (Danny Griffin) marries first, to widower Frances (Tuppence Middleton), who's joined by her daughter June (Justine Moore). Soames Forsyte (Joshua Orpin), jealous that his cousin beat him to the punch, devises a plan to regain power in the family. Soames is also distracted by Irene (Millie Gibson), a passionate ballerina whose father dies and leaves her penniless. On June's 18th birthday, she gets a dress made by Louisa (Eleanor Tomlinson) and struggles against her mother's wishes to marry off quickly. When secrets surface, the Forsytes find themselves struggling to uphold their legacy amongst lies.
Is It Any Good?
This series slowly unspools it secrets and family drama. In the genre of late-Victorian family dramas, The Forsytes takes a cozier approach to the marriage mania and dynasty-building. Viewers looking for more energy may lean toward similar series like Bridgerton. There's a bit of kissing and drinking, but it's suitable watch for most middle schoolers and older.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about why shows like The Forsytes are so appealing. Is it the characters? The setting? Do you think there are endless possibilities in a series like this, or does the story eventually lose momentum?
A central theme explored in this show is tradition. What, if any, traditions affect your life? Do you agree with them? Why or why not? What purpose do you think tradition serves? When is it necessary/helpful for change?
