What's the Story?

THE REAL WOLF OF WALL STREET revisits the remarkable true story behind Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street (starring Leonardo DiCaprio). Through interviews with former colleagues, investigators, journalists, victims, and people portrayed in the film, the three-part docuseries examines Jordan Belfort's rise, his massive securities fraud, and the many ways Hollywood altered the story for the big screen.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say : Not yet rated
Kids say ( 1 ):

Rather than simply retelling the story of Jordan Belfort's rise and fall, the series adds valuable context by interviewing people from nearly every chapter of his life, from childhood friends and former employees to investigators and victims whose stories were largely absent from the film. One of the greatest strengths of The Real Wolf of Wall Street is directly comparing scenes from the movie with the real events, separating fact from fiction, and revealing just how much was embellished or omitted. The result is both engrossing and surprisingly entertaining, almost like watching movie a second time through an entirely different lens. Most importantly, the series restores the voices of those who suffered real financial and emotional consequences, rounding out a story that Hollywood largely told from Belfort's perspective.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about why you think movies and documentaries sometimes tell very different versions of the same true story. How can filmmakers influence the way we feel about real people through things like perspective and editing?

  • How does hearing directly from victims in the docuseries change your opinion of the story? Why is it important to consider whose voices are included or excluded in documentaries and movies?

  • The series shows how wealth, luxury, and excess can be glamorized even when they're built on unethical behavior. How do things like integrity, self-control, and humility shape real success?
