What's the Story?
Three spring-themed shorts make up THE WONDERFUL SPRING OF MICKEY MOUSE. The first story appears like a modern-day Silly Symphony, even featuring the old windmill from the award-winning 1930s shorts. Mickey (Chris Diamantopoulos), Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and Goofy have zero speaking lines and the short relies 100% on old-fashioned slap-stick cartoon comedy. Adding to the laughs is the dwarf Dopey (from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), whose bald smiling head appears as the sun. Mickey and his friends appear as blooming flowers, except for Goofy (Bill Farmer) who is a caterpillar and Donald, who is a bushel of grapes. Trying to climb a hill to reach the sun at the top, they get washed away by strong thundering rain storms. Eventually, the gang is able to blow away the rain clouds and make it to the top of the hill where Mickey and his friends bloom into full flowers under the sun, except for Goofy who goes through metamorphosis and becomes a butterfly and Donald (Tony Anselmo), whose grapes get swollen and tragically shrivel up. In the second short, Mickey and Minnie (Kaitlyn Robrock) get to work replanting their garden and unintentionally disrupt their neighbors. Goofy battles a pollen allergy and Donald's hammock relaxation is interrupted when he's attacked by a swarm of bees. Although Mickey and Minnie get ahead of themselves in the garden, they catch themselves before it is too late and are able to make things right. In the third short, Minnie goes to Mickey's apartment to help him kickstart his spring cleaning but Mickey's refusal to part with the things he's been hoarding for years turns Minnie's visit into an intervention of sorts. Look carefully and you'll spot an old animation desk, a Luxo lamp, and the Pixar ball, just to point out a few Easter eggs. Minnie eventually convinces Mickey that to make room for new stuff, he has to get rid of the old stuff. This springtime special ends as Mickey, wanting to pay it forward, offers to help Minnie with spring cleaning at her place next. The narrator concludes with "All is good, thanks to the power of spring."
Is It Any Good?
This is not your typical Mickey Mouse special full of music and colors and appealing to the littlest viewers. Instead, this is a special for an older set of Disney fans that may enjoy comical absurdity and appreciate the thrill of identifying hidden Easter eggs. The Wonderful Spring of Mickey Mouse has a retro Disney feel, and families might enjoy a good laugh together, but some might find it disappointingly filled with nonsensical wackiness. Fans of The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse may enjoy this latest spring celebration, but those looking for something more on-brand for Disney may be greatly disappointed. The series is designed to be fun, but that happens at the expense of any kind of substantial content.
