What's the Story?

UNCHOSEN follows Rosie (Molly Windsor), a devoted wife and mother living in a secluded religious community known as the Fellowship of the Divine. Her life begins to unravel after mysterious outsider Sam (Fra Fee) enters the compound, triggering doubts about the group's strict beliefs and the authority of its leader, Mr. Phillips (Christopher Eccleston). As Rosie grows increasingly aware of the control and abuse surrounding her even from her own husband Adam (Asa Butterfield), she becomes determined to escape and build a safer future for her young daughter, Grace (Olivia Pickering).

Our review:

This self-serious psychological thriller ends up feeling unintentionally soapy. Unchosen is at its strongest when it centers on Rosie's internal conflict and her fierce determination to protect Grace, grounding the story in emotional stakes that feel immediate and personal. Windsor delivers a compelling performance, capturing both vulnerability and resilience, while Butterfield adds complexity as Adam is torn between indoctrination and his own identity.

But the show's dark material—manipulation, coercion, and abuse—often feels more punishing than insightful. While its themes of personal freedom and resistance are clear, the storytelling doesn't always bring new depth to the "cult escape" tropes, instead relying on exploitation rather than nuance. Ultimately, it's a story about breaking free that never quite frees itself from conventions.

  • Families can talk about Unchosen's depiction of how growing up in a controlling system shapes people's beliefs. How responsible are these people for the harm they cause? And when should they be held accountable for their actions?

  • What does true freedom mean? Escaping a physical environment, or learning to think and choose independently? And can one exist without the other?

  • How does oppression in the show affect women differently than men? How do expectations around gender shape the roles and choices available to women? And what challenges do they face when trying to break free?
