Engagement, Approach, Support

Engagement

Makes it easy for parents to surround their kids with books they'll enjoy and benefit from, although the books here don't have the interactive qualities kids might expect from a smartphone or tablet book.

Learning Approach

Kids can learn a variety of topics through reading, and read-along highlighting helps guide emerging readers. Titles represent diversity.

Support

Kids may need a little help at first, as there are no verbal instructions. There are links for parents to connect to Facebook, email, and the App Store.

Thinking & Reasoning

  • applying information

Kids can learn about a variety of topics given the app's wide selection of books. Each of the nine worlds represents a different genre of books for kids to explore. For example, Sing Along City includes books set to familiar songs, and Classics Grove features classic stories. Titles feature racial, ethnic, and religious diversity, and if a kid chooses to hear the book read, the words are highlighted as they follow along, which supports early reading skills. Farfaria Storybooks - Library of Children's Books and Read Along With Me Stories can be a solid literacy tool, so long as kids are eager to read and have adults nearby to offer feedback.

What's it about?

The opening screen of FARFARIA STORYBOOKS - LIBRARY OF CHILDREN'S BOOKS AND READ ALONG WITH ME STORIES shows a scrolling menu of featured books. Kids and parents can choose "Explore the World" to browse books by genre: Within each genre, they can browse titles alphabetically, by release date, or by reading level. Reading levels range from Level PK for prereaders to Level S for fluent readers (Grade 4). Depending on ability and preference, kids can read to themselves, listen on auto-play, or read along as words are highlighted. The books have no interactive elements, so kids simply swipe to turn pages; however, there are sing-along books. A top menu gives kids the option to exit a book or make it a favorite for easy access later, and the share option requires parental assistance to share a favorite title with a friend via email. Parents also can join the Book Club and connect with contacts or via Facebook.

LEARNING

Over 750 diverse titles!

For the past two and a half years, my family has been using FarFaria as our primary source of storybooks. FarFaria is a subscription-based app with hundreds of books that are diverse, engaging, and leveled appropriately for children PK through elementary. Having high quality storybooks on a phone or tablet is convenient for parents and fun for kids. My 4-year-old and 6-year-old both love FarFaria.
