What's It About?
When you start using MOSHI KIDS: SLEEP & MEDITATION, create a personal profile for each child and search through organized categories to access over 400 pieces of unique stories of the Moshlings in the magical world of Moshi. Beautiful illustrations may help to initially choose what to listen to, but the app features primarily audio content in the form of stories, episodes, music, sounds, and meditations that range from one minute to an hour. Browse pre-compiled playlists, or make your own. Listening controls include AirPlay, automatic repeat, advance or go back in 15-second intervals, and share.
Is It Any Good?
This collection of sweetly imaginative stories is wonderfully kid-friendly. Given the collection of music and stories in Moshi Kids: Sleep & Meditation, it's an excellent resource for families with children of varying ages. Some of the shorter stories will help parents reinforce skills for self-control and mindfulness when they use the app to teach kids the skills of meditation and deep breathing. Tracks are nicely paced and sleepy sounding almost immediately, so it's probably not best for use in the car. The lovely graphics disappear once the audio track gets going, but parents should be firm about playing the content using AirPlay or Bluetooth to keep the device out of the bedroom.
The high subscription price makes Moshi Kids: Sleep & Meditation a bit of an investment each year. But parents will have access to all the content during the free trial to make a solid decision. If kids learn to fall asleep faster and bedtime becomes a more peaceful routine as a result of listening to these tracks, the fee will be well worth the investment to have a well-rested family.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about why their kids might need Moshi Kids: Sleep & Meditation to fall asleep. Is there something that's worrying them at home or school? Are they tense? What's getting in the way of them winding down at the end of the day? Is there a specific story or guided meditation to help their feelings that you can put in a playlist they can access?
While it might be fun to look for a long time through the library of audio content, some kids will have a hard time choosing something to listen to. Set a timer to make a choice, and stick with the story picked for that day. Don't let kids get into a power struggle in the bedroom by allowing them to change the story or music as a means of delaying bedtime.
Discuss the use of screens, technology, and apps in our daily lives. While the app relies on a device to play the content, it's a tool for listening to the music and stories, and the device does not have to be in the bedroom at bedtime for us to enjoy these features.
