What's the Story?
Jackie Cruz (Jennifer Lopez) is the feared CEO of a major airline in OFFICE ROMANCE. When her top lawyer (Bradley Whitford) is taken temporarily out of commission, his number two, Daniel Blanchflower (Brett Goldstein), is called in to handle an important case. Jackie and Daniel, especially Daniel, have an attraction, but company policy stipulates no interoffice romances are allowed. Jackie's position is already tenuous, as her pregnant colleague and friend Sydney Bloom (Betty Gilpin) keeps reminding her. Despite her dad, airline co-founder Captain Jack (Edward James Olmos), heading it, the company's board has long been looking to oust her. Will Jackie and Daniel risk it all to be together?
Is It Any Good?
This romance takes some chances with raunchy material that might be expected by fans of co-writer/co-star Goldstein's comedy, but which could take Lopez followers and unprepared viewers by surprise. That includes some remarkably explicit sex talk in Office Romance and—spoiler alert—a graphic birth scene. The stars' meet cute revolves around a surprise "boner," an early clue that this film is the brainchild of Goldstein, known for his bawdy comedy acts as well as wholesome TV series Ted Lasso (whose co-creator Joe Kelly co-write this film). It's Adam Sandler (whose wife has a supporting role) for grown-ups.
The film's unexpected edge can be quite funny. A whole bit on British uses of the word "c--t" is plucked straight out of Goldstein's Netflix special. Audiences looking for a throwback to the gentler Lopez romances of yore—like Wedding Planner or Maid in Manhattan—may be in for a shock. The writers seem to have gone for giggles, not offense, with that shock factor, but sometimes it's to the detriment of the storyline, which lags at moments. Gilpin is the real discovery here, bringing hilarious fury to her extremely pregnant character's attempts to keep the star-crossed lovers apart.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about whether Office Romance flips gender roles typical of romantic comedies. If you could go back and swap gender roles in any of your favorite romantic comedies, how would the film change?
In what ways is Goldstein's British culture incorporated into the script? Did this feel natural to the storyline or forced? Did you find it funny?
Discuss the strong language used in the movie. What did it contribute to the movie? Did it feel necessary or gratuitous? Why?
What was your reaction to the childbirth scene? Why do you think this was included?
