What's the Story?
THE GOLDEN BACHELORETTE features a woman in her later years hoping to successfully find love a second time. Joan Vassos, 61, was a contestant on The Golden Bachelor but had to suddenly leave due to a family emergency. Now she's starring in the sequel, and is introduced to 24 suitors between the ages of 57 and 69, all hoping for a chance to win her heart. After the initial meetings, eight men are eliminated, and the rest move into the mansion and vie for opportunities to spend more time with her and make sparks fly instead of being sent packing. Meanwhile, Joan hopes that one of them will turn out to be the man she wants to spend this phase of her life with.
Is It Any Good?
Hosted by Jesse Palmer, this predictable dating show spin-off offers all of the drama promised by The Bachelor franchise while breaking ageist stereotypes. Joan Vassos and the contestants all present themselves as people in their prime while still openly mentioning some of the pros and cons of getting older, including being a grandparent and getting slower. All these conversations help normalize the idea of dating and romance among people over 60. Contestants discuss the love and pride they have for their children, or talk about the tragic loss of their longtime partner, which often exposes a vulnerable side to the men. There are a few distinctive suitors in the mix, including a former Bachelorette cast member's dad and a man who identifies as the late Tina Turner's godson. It's an interesting and relatively mature atmosphere, but one that still leaves room for awkward moments, minor spats, and people just trying too hard while on camera. Indeed, The Golden Bachelorette still delivers what franchise fans are looking for.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the likelihood of people finding love on an unscripted TV dating show. How many people who've paired up in The Bachelor franchise are still together? Is this surprising?
What reasons do different cast members have for appearing on The Golden Bachelorette? Do you think they behave the same way in their everyday lives as they do on camera?
